Wonder Versus Indifference
“A man in love understands what I
say. A man who desires, who hungers, one who walks in this desert
and is thirsty, who yearns for the fount of definitive life,
a man like this knows of what I speak. If I address myself,
instead, to a cold man, he will understand nothing of what I
say.”
— St. Augustine
Who are the “cold men and women”
of our time?
Those who have given up on a livelier life…those who
no longer “hunger and thirst” for anything beyond
their current circumstances…those who are going through
the motions, with nothing—or no one—to sustain their
joy.
“The glory of God,” St. Ireneus
once said, “is the human person fully alive!” Isn’t
that the deepest desire of the human heart: to be fully alive…fully
loved…fully human…and fully free?
Sadly, many of us have become indifferent,
resigned to a belief that a life full of wonder is no longer possible
for us personally given the reality of our situation. Even sadder,
this resignation has seeped into the hearts of many men and women
who participate in parish life, dimming the lights of communities
called to reflect infinite love, warmth and passion.
Do you believe that it is possible for you to become “fully
alive” again…or maybe even for the first time in
your life?
Come and see!
